Celebrating Black History Month

let's talk about the impact the black pioneers made in the construction industry

We have been highlighting Black-Owned Businesses on our Instagram (@jcretrofitconstruction) on our Mamba Monday posts throughout February.
Today we are acknowledging the impact and contribution black people have had on the construction industry as a whole.

In an article in the National Black Chamber of Commerce, Harry C Alford writes about the legacy and contribution Black people have had in the construction industry throughout history. One of the opening lines depicts just that, “From the pyramids of Egypt to the building of America, Blacks have been involved in this industry that will survive the times.”

  • Construction is one of the richest legacies of African descendants.
  • From the pyramids of Egypt to the building of America, Black people have been a vital factor in the success of the construction industry.
  • America relied heavily on the crafts taught by Black people during slavery and passed on this craftsmanship for generations to come.
  • During Jim Crow laws, construction unions in the North were formed to block out Black construction crews from coming into communities and providing a better service for a affordable pricing.
  • The co-founder and President/CEO of the NBCC recount his interactions with people he knew in construction, admiring them for their work.

Without these construction pioneers, we would not have made the advances we have today. JC Retrofit Construction Inc. is proud to follow the footsteps of the people who came before us in this industry.
